At the Mountain’s Base

Namrata Tripathi at Penguin’s new Kokila imprint has acquired At the Mountain’s Base by Cherokee author Traci Sorell, illustrated by Weshoyot Alvitre, a Tongva/Scots-Gaelic comics artist making her picture-book debut. The circular story in verse describes a pilot engaged in battle far away, while her family waits at home for her safe return. Publication is slated for fall 2019; Emily Mitchell at Wernick & Pratt represented the author in the deal for world English rights; the illustrator was unagented.

Powwow Day

 Karen Boss at Charlesbridge has bought world rights to Powwow Day by Cherokee author, Traci Sorell, illustrated by Spirit Lake Dakota/Mohegan/Muscogee Creek artist Marlena Myles. This book is about a traditional powwow celebration as seen through the eyes of a girl whose illness keeps her from participating; back matter includes information about the history and functions of powwows. Publication is slated for spring 2020; Emily Mitchell at Wernick & Pratt represented the author, and the illustrator represented herself.
